FEPS member Mike Walker has won the 2008 competition for the Ron Wake Memorial Trophy.
The photograph shows the male and female Great Blue Heron in full breeding plumage starting to build their nest in readiness for breeding. They had got off the mark early as the shot was taken last December in Eastern Florida.
Mike took the shot from one of the boardwalks in the Wakodohatchee Reserve in Eastern Florida. As usual with such wildlife shots a great deal of patience was needed on Mike's part to achieve such a successful image. Using a 500mm lens and tripod Mike had to wait until both birds were facing in the same direction. It was important also to make sure there were no distractions in the background. As two birds were involved Mike had the added complication of ensuring that they were both in the same plane before taking the shot, to guarantee sufficient depth of field and hence sharpness.
Mike will be talking about his bird photography at the club on 16 February 2009 when, with his wife Val, they will give their Walkers on Wildlife presentation. This promises to be a special evening with lots of beautiful images for the audience to enjoy.
The print competition for the Ron Wake Memorial Trophy is held every year amongst six local photographic clubs. It is organised by Harrow Camera Club to coincide with their annual exhibition.
